Henry the Bird started with our family.
Yeji was born and raised in Korea and now lives in New York, and she has always carried pieces of both places with her. The traditions she grew up with, the things she loves about this city, her faith, and the experience of becoming a mother all find their way into her drawings.
What began as drawings for our own children became Henry the Bird. We hope that as our blankets become part of your family's everyday moments, they begin to hold some of your stories too.
Why Henry the Bird?
The name comes from two dreams that have been in our family for generations.
Before Yeji was born, her family dreamed of a tree filled with jewels. Years later, before our first son Henry was born, they dreamed again. This time of a small bird wearing a crown.
In Korean culture these are called taemong, dreams that arrive with a child and get retold in families for decades. When she started drawing for her own children, both dreams found their way onto paper. The jeweled tree became the heart of Tree of Love. The crowned bird became Henry the Bird.
Pieces of our story are hidden throughout the designs. A bird in the branches, a small jewel, a familiar corner of the city, something drawn from our faith. Some are easy to find. Others take years.
